Building a Path for Korean-Language
High School Credit in Alberta For the day Korean-Albertan students earn credit in their heritage language

KHEA Alberta is an Alberta-registered non-profit run entirely by volunteer Korean parents in Edmonton. Centered on the Hi! Hangeul Project, our effort to establish a Korean-language high school credit course, we build the next generation's Korean-language education landscape through seminars, workshops, and cultural events.

About

Founded by Parents Who Asked a Question Founded by parents, for the next generation

KHEA (Korean Heritage & Education Association of Alberta) began in the fall of 2024 with a question: "Is there no way for Korean students in Alberta to earn high school credit through their heritage language?" An early online community petition drew 135 responses, confirming shared interest and leading to the formal founding of a non-profit organization.

KHEA was formally registered as a society in Alberta in December 2025. As of the 2025/26 cycle, 39 active members run the board and all programs entirely as volunteers. The board has held a regular weekly meeting every Tuesday evening since May 21, 2025.

Our name reflects the mission of bringing Korean Heritage and Education together in Alberta — a community built jointly by member parents and educators.

Flagship Initiative

Hi! Hangeul Project

KHEA's flagship initiative aims to establish Korean as a formal high school credit course within Alberta's public education curriculum. Calgary already runs a Korean credit course as a Locally Developed Program (LDP), and Jasper Place High School previously offered a Korean course as well — precedents we believe let us draw on existing curriculum materials already in place across Alberta.

In Progress

Demonstrating measurable student demand, securing a host school for the program, and lining up funding and qualified teachers remain the key tasks ahead.

Collaboration

We are in ongoing discussions with EPSB’s Curriculum department, Alberta Education, and the Korean Language Education Foundation of America (New York), drawing on models from the United States.

Building Support

We have sent letters requesting support and guidance to political and government figures, including Canadian Senator Yonah Martin.

Spring Seminar — Korean Parents Information Night
The Derrick Golf & Winter Club · 47 registered. Themed "Raising Our Kids Within Canada’s Education System," the evening featured a guest talk by an EPSB program coordinator and a conversation on language and cultural identity for second-generation Korean-Canadian children.

Founder & President Deborah Yun · Mentorship partnership formed October–November 2025. Runs a STEM mentorship program for Korean-Canadian high schoolers; the 1:1 pre-med mentorship track fills so quickly it closes early.
Korean Weekly (주간한국)
The publisher serves as an editorial advisor to the KHEA Newsletter and also runs KHEA event announcements.
Korean Language School Network
We promote events and programs through a network of local Korean language schools, including Bethel Korean School.
EPSB (Edmonton Public Schools)
We collaborate with EPSB’s Curriculum department, Intercultural Liaison team, and Mental Health Capacity Building team on regular programs and seminars.
